Neighbourhood Renewal

Athnuachan Comharsanachta

What is Neighbourhood Renewal?

In June 2003, Government launched Neighbourhood Renewal - People and Place.  Neighbourhoods in the most deprived 10% of wards across Northern Ireland were identified using the Noble Multiple Deprivation Measure. Following extensive consultation, this resulted in a total of 36 areas, and a population of approximately 280,000 (one person in 6in Northern Ireland), being targeted for intervention. The Andersonstown area was identified as one of these areas. The boundary of area designated the Neighbourhood Renewal zone is that area inside the perimeter of the Shaw's Road, Glen Road and Andersonstown Road. It also takes in some areas on the other side of the Glen Road and Shaw's Road.

Neighbourhood Renewal Areas include:
• 15  in Belfast
• 6 in the North West (including four in the city of Derry/ Londonderry)
• 15 in other towns and cities across Northern Ireland

Neighbourhood Renewal Partnerships

Neighbourhood Partnerships have been established in each Neighbourhood Renewal Area as a vehicle for local planning and implementation. Each Neighbourhood Partnership should include representatives of key political, statutory, voluntary, community and private sector stakeholders. Together, they have developed long term visions and action plans designed to improve the quality of life for those living in the area.

An insight into what we do

• An agreed and practical plan of action that can change and respond to needs and opportunities as they arise;

• Clear communications channels developed with and between all stakeholders of the action plan;

• A realistic and genuine approach to the skewing of resources and expenditure by Departments and Agencies working in the Andersonstown area to meet the locally expressed need;

• The ANP as a driving force for making decisions and taking actions forward;

• Positive and timely monitoring of progress in relation to the actions, and appropriate action where necessary;

• On-going engagement and involvement of the local community in the renewal process;

• The following action plan provides a clear basis for partnership delivery and buy-in from all of the stakeholders needed to deliver positive and long-term change in Andersonstown;

• The ANP will link in with the Neighbourhood Renewal Forum through the West Belfast Partnership Board to ensure the effective delivery of area plans.

Our hopes and plans for the future

We hope that Neighbourhood Renewal will continue to proactively work for the community in the Andersonstown area to keep bringing about positive change. In order to do this, we will be trying to put our efforts into rejuvenating the Andersonstown Neighbourhood Partnerships style of working in the area so that it will be more efficient and effective at dealing with tasks. We feel that this will be important in helping us deal with major infrastructure projects and key issues such as health which will come to the fore in the area.

Under the Neighbourhood Renewal remit we will be focusing on the following thematic areas going forward;

• Community Renewal
• Economic Renewal
• Social Renewal- Education/ Lifelong Learning
• Social Renewal- Health
• Social Renewal- Safer Neighbourhoods
• Physical Renewal

We work with a wide range of partners in the Andersonstown area in order to achieve this with the Andersonstown Neighborhood Partnership. Each member of the Partnership will have a keen interest in one or more of these thematic areas. We will work with these partners in order to bring about positive change for the Andersonstown area wherever we can.
